Pontifex Maximus

As a Roman Catholic and as an American, the 6 day apostolic journey of His Holiness, Benedict XVI, to the United States will be forever engraved in my mind. From the incredible and historic reception by the President of the United States at Andrews Air Force Base to the send off by Vice President Richard Cheney at JFK, the Bishop of Rome was received and treated with full honors and utmost respect.
Of course, sandwiched in between the events in Washington, DC, and New York City were absolutely stunning and evidently brought great joy to the Holy Father.
The unprecedented meeting with those who suffered so grievously the effects of sexual abuse by members of the clergy and his continuous denunciations throughout his tour of those malicious acts showed his deep compassion for the flock & commitment to cleanse the church.
Yesterday, on hallowed ground he gave a benediction at Ground Zero and then a "Sermon on the Mound" at historic Yankees Stadium. All in all, the Vicar of Christ brought his message of love, justice and true freedom within the context of the primacy of the Holy See.
It will be a recalled as a trip for the ages and a clarion call to arms for the church in America to re-embolden itself and re-double its' efforts in both temporal and spiritual matters.
