A Billy Martin Moment....FINALLY

Hank Steinbrenner, the Yankees’ co-chairman, likes to say Joe Girardi is Billy Martin without the baggage. Like Martin, Girardi has a feisty side and does not take losing well. He also knows how to bark at an umpire, with a display of theatrics Thursday night at Yankee Stadium that would make Martin, Lou Piniella and Earl Weaver proud.

Girardi got his first ejection as the Yankees’ manager in the ninth inning of a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles, and he earned it. After the plate umpire, Chris Guccione, ruled that Jason Giambi had tipped a ball into catcher Ramón Hernández’s glove for strike three, Girardi put on a cap-kicking show that seemed to work perfectly.

“Joe got fired up,” Giambi said, “and we got fired up.” (NY Times)
